How To Come Up With Blog Post Ideas

Blog Post Ideas

So you’ve decided to start a blog…but what are you going to write about? Coming up with fresh new ideas for a blog can be one of the most difficult parts of maintaining it. This post will provide seven tips for coming up with blog post ideas, as well as six tips that aren’t directly related to coming up with blog post ideas, but rather health and self-care tips that will help the process.

Think about the topic of your blog

What do you want to talk about? What topics would your audience be interested in reading about? Start jotting those ideas down – at this stage you’re just coming up with ideas, so write everything down, whether it’s good or bad.

Read a lot about your blog’s topic

If your blog is going to be about healthy eating, be sure stay up to date on different diets and different recipes so that you can share them with your readers. If you don’t have time to read, consider creating a Google Alert (or multiple Google Alerts if your blog covers more than one topic) for the keywords related to your blog. That way you’ll get ideas in your inbox every day or every week, depending on how often you choose to receive alerts. Look through the search results, and save the articles you think you might want to write about, or have a post written about (Evernote is great for this).

Go back over posts you’ve written previously and see if there’s content you add to them to bring them up to date

I do this often at one of the blogs I write for, Work at Home Adventures – I’ll check my old posts frequently to see if any of the companies I’ve written about previously have changed the way they do things, or even if they still hire people who work from home.

Remember, not every post needs to be a text post

There are different things you can do with your blog posts.  For example, you could take a blog post that performed well and turn it into a video or an infographic.

Ask other people for ideas

If you’re really stuck, ask other people for ideas.  One place I likie to go to get ideas is MyBlogU – I’ve posted a lot of brainstorming requests for blogs I’ve had over the past few years, and the peole on that website always come up with ideas. You don’t need to necessarily use a site like this though, just ask people that you know that work in your field, or those that write about the topic you want to write about. You could even ask people who don’t write in your genre for ideas – they may have ideas that you haven’t thought about.

Attend conferences, get on conference calls, or listen to podcasts about your blog’s topic

One of the best things I ever did for my first website,  My eBook Journey was to listen to a series of webinars called the Self Publishing Success Summit last year. Not only did those webinars give me a lot of good information and ideas for writing and marketing my eBooks, they also gave me a lot of information for my blog.

Join social networking groups that are related to your  blog’s topic

Read posts in these groups, and don’t be afraid to post yourself. You can really learn a lot by actively participating in groups,  these groups.  To find groups, go to the social networking site, find the section for groups, and do a search for groups that are related to the topic you’re interested in.

And here are some other tips for coming up with blog post ideas that aren’t really about creating at all, but more about important daily practices that will help your creative process:

Get plenty of sleep every day

This sounds basic, but so many of us sacrifice sleep for the other things we have to do. Getting plenty of sleep is important for the creative process, as well as for good health in general. This is because sleeping allows your body to rest and recover from the day. I’ve often found that I’ll wake up in the middle of the night with a good idea (or two or three) about something after I’ve rested for even just a few hours. Even if you’re not a night person, taking a nap in the middle of the day can help your creative process as well.

Exercise helps rejuvenate your body and give it energy. It also helps blood flow to the brain, so you’re able to come up with better ideas easier after you’ve exercised, than when your body is feeling tired or your mind is cluttered.

Eat healthy food

This is something else that probably sounds basic, but often gets taken for granted. With our lifestyles being as hectic as they are, it’s easy to sacrifice healthy food for something that’s convenient, like a fast food hamburger or chicken sandwich that’s loaded with fat and sodium. The truth is though, some of the healthiest options are just as convenient, if not more convenient than the “junk” options. How much time does it take to grab a piece of fruit, wash it off and start eating it? Probably just as much time, if not less time, than it would take you to open up a bag of chips. Yes, some fruits and vegetables do require a little more preparation than others before you can eat them, but I’ve found that if I do the preparation beforehand and then package those fruits or vegetables up, it makes them easier to grab later. For example, one snack I like to eat is baby carrots – what I’ll do usually is over the weekend, or early Monday morning, I’ll get a bag of baby carrots and divide it into a few equal servings, so I have them ready for when I want to eat a healthy snack.

I try to meditate for at least 5 minutes every morning before I get up, sometimes longer if I have the time. If I don’t have the time in the morning, I’ll make some extra time during the day to sneak in another short meditation. Meditating gets my mind mentally ready for the focus I’m going to have to put in to do my best at whatever I’m doing, whether it’s exercising or working at my job.

Drink plenty of water.

Most of us know how important it is to drink enough water to stay hydrated, but water is also important for proper brain function. Brain cells need to have the right balance of water and other elements so they can work correctly – when you don’t have enough water that balance gets disrupted. It’s especially important to drink a few glasses of water right after you wake up, because the time you spend sleeping is the time that your body goes without water the longest.

Take some time for yourself

This is another area that many people have trouble with. We get so caught up in doing things for others, that we forget to do things that give us pleasure, like spending time working on other creative projects or other hobbies. It’s important to take time for yourself every so often though, because it helps relieve stress, and can also help you come up with ideas for your blog.

These are just a few of the tips that I have for ways to come up with blog post ideas. If you have other tips that have worked for you I’d love to hear them – please feel free to comment below.
